There is no question the NBA dunk contest lacks star power, this has caused the popularity of the event to go down big time . Just look at Saturday’s dunk contest, and who was in it Jeremy Evans, Paul George, Chase Budinger and Derrick Williams. Who?
There were no really highlight dunks on the evening. Most of the dunks were done with props. So they weren’t great dunks but the props made them look better.
So clearly the NBA dunk contest needs star power that it used to have. I used to like the slam dunk contest ten times better than the all star game itself. Now I could care less about both. I sure miss the days of Michael Jordan and Vince Carter.
At least one NBA player realizes this event needs more star power. Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant tweeted the following this weekend.
It’s time for @KingJames, Mr Westbrook, Mr.Rose, and @DwyaneWade to get in the dunk contest
Wade replied to Durant. “Not me but I agree with the others,” Wade replied.
Man, if these players did the dunk contest how much hype would that get? That would clearly be the highlight of the weekend. I would also like to see Durant in the dunk contest. For whatever reason though the star players don’t want to do it anymore. James hasn’t done one in his whole career.
Somehow we need to make this happen but problem is I don’t know how. It is really up to the players and say hey this event needs to be what he used to be, we need to do this. No one can force the players to enter the contest. I doubt this will happened but if it did it would be great.
