Suns want to resign Nash?

Published on March 1, 2012 by Scott Shirley   ·   No Comments

Steve Nash is a free agent after this year, yet you don’t hear his name come up in trade talks. While Chris Paul already forced a trade and Dwight Howard trade rumors are out there every day. While it was always thought that the Suns would let Nash walk at the end of the season there are now reports that the Suns want to resign Nash . That according to ESPN.com

Because Suns owner Robert Sarver, according to sources close to the situation, continues to hold out hope that he can convince Nash to re-sign this summer for at least two seasons.

Sarver, though, is apparently determined to try to convince Nash to retire in the desert. The thinking there, sources say, is that the Suns believe they’d have a better core going forward with a re-upped Nash, center Marcin Gortat, cap space and a top pick in the well-regarded 2012 draft than with the sort of assets they could bring back now in a deadline deal for a 38-year-old point guard who, even as he continues to play at an All-Star level, is just a few months away from free agency.

I really don’t see why the Suns would resign Nash . The Suns are in re building mode and they need to get younger. If Nash wants to sign with the Suns fine but they better not over pay for him.

One thing is clear Nash will not force a trade. Why, because Nash is a true pro and loyal to his current team the Phoenix Suns. I wish they were more pros like Nash.

Earlier this month this month Nash told ESPN.com that he will not request a trade.

“I’m not oblivious to [the chance of] playing on a contender,’ Nash said. ‘But at the same time, especially in the position I’m in right now, I feel a sense of loyalty to my team. To go and ask for a trade, it’s not like I’m going to say, ‘Trade me to…’’ [...] ‘Everyone wants to be on a contender,’ Nash said. ‘It’s cyclical. Right now we’re not contending. We’re just trying to fight for an eighth spot. I just feel like I owe it to my teammates [to stay]. I like these guys a lot. I want to fight for them and see how good we can be. If we take our lumps, we take our lumps.’”

This year’s Sun team is probably the worst Sun team in years. Nash is currently 37 years and his window to win a NBA championship is fading. Right now the Suns are well below .500 and no playoffs in sight. Still though you know Nash is going to go out there every night and play his best.

So far this season in 31 games Nash is averaging 13.9 points and 10.9 assists. The assists numbers are good enough for the best in the NBA.

So Nash would bring a lot to a team trying to make that playoff run. The only way Nash will get dealt is if he knows that the trade will make the Suns better in the future. He won’t just make the Suns be forced to trade him only if the deal is right.

As you can see Nash is still producing great numbers especially assists, but his body is wearing down. He probably only has 2 more good years in him. I hope after this season in free agency Nash signs with a contending team and does not resign with the Suns. I wish there were more Steve Nash’s in the NBA.
