Cleveland Cavaliers PG Kyrie Irving had to be one of the more “meh” choices as the top pick in the past draft. He only played in 11 games while at Duke. While his sample size is minuscule, the world of basketball knew his potential. In a draft that had quite a few sprinklings of stardom in the second round, Cleveland Cavaliers PG Kyrie Irving was more or less the clear cut top pick. Unfortunately, Irving did not have the explosiveness or marketability of a guy like Miami Heat SF LeBron James or Los Angeles Clippers PF Blake Griffin, but Kyrie Irving has done more than enough to solidify his case as the obvious rookie of the year.
Kyrie Irving has scored in bunches against the elite guards in the NBA, most recently exceeding twenty points again against the lengthy PG Rajon Rondo. Kyrie Irving also shredded the competition in the Rising Stars game.
In a handful of Cleveland Cavaliers games against the Miami Heat, the Cavs have played them hard. Irving’s scoring is no small order, and his offensive ability has carried his team either competitively or to surprising victories all season. Of course, there is no single player that can replace LeBron James, but it is certainly helpful to both the fans and the win-loss column that Irving has come in and displayed the type of on command scoring that the maligned city has desired.
While his style, his confidence, and his play is nowhere near LeBron as a rookie, Irving is the next great Cleveland Cav, in a city so void of championship glory. As a Floridian with several friends who root in Cleveland, it hurts a bit to see their disappointment. Beginning with the 1997 World Series and culminating in “The Decision,” the city of Miami has found ways to back stab Cleveland again and again.
Kyrie Irving is no temporary elixir, he’s not Advil, but a shot in the arm. He is no LeBron James, but he is the kind of player who will carry this franchise for years, and make these sour Cavs fans into optimistic believers. He will see his first trophy at years end. He is the blatant choice for Rookie of the Year.
