In today’s NBA you can’t lose your cool because you will either be tossed or receive a technical. This happened when the Dallas Mavericks traveled to play the Utah Jazz. During a heated exchange Jazz forward Derrick Favors lost his cool and was tossed.
The NBA announced this past weekend that Favors was fined $25000 for throwing the basketball towards the Mavericks bench and stands after he was frustrated.
This all started in the 3rd quarter when Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki slapped the ball out of Favors hand during a dead ball. For whatever reason Nowitzki was not given a technical on the play probably because of his superstar status. Then as soon as Nowizki did that Jazz guard Earl Watson retaliated by knocking the ball out of Nowitzki’s hands and Waston was issued a technical. So you can see how the emotions were running.
Shortly after this exchange is when Favors got tossed. Favors got called for setting a moving screen on Lamar Odom. After the foul was called Favors threw the ball towards the Mavericks bench and the stands in disgust.
Replays show the ball flew over the head of a ballboy sitting along the baseline. It was caught by an unidentified person sitting next to the last player on the Mavs’ bench.
Favors gave his thoughts on the situation
When the referee calls a foul,” he said, “just walk away from it.” “Me and my agent, we are going to try to do it Monday.” “I don’t know, man,” Favors said. “You just have to deal with it. I was surprised. I mean … I was surprised.”
Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin gave his thoughts about the situation
“… Unfortunate. It was a mistake, I thought. He didn’t intend to throw it in the stands. But that’s what the rule is. I didn’t realize the fine was that [heavy], but it is what it is. You have to move forward.”
The Mavs won the game 94 to 91.
