This is the finals that everyone wanted to see from the league to the fans and the TV ratings from game 1 of the NBA finals prove that. Game 1 between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat drew the highest rating for a Game that ABC has ever had.
The Thunder’s 105 to 94 win drew a Nielsen rating of 11.8. That number is up 10 percent over last year finals game 1 between the Dallas Mavericks and Heat. The Previous record was an 11.6 rating that happened in 2004 in a game between the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers.
The reason why this matchup is so intriguing is because of its star power. The Thunder feature Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden. While the Heat feature LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. That’s what fans want to see the best players in the game going after the title. This is what draws ratings.
There will feature many storylines. Who will get their first ring Durant or James? Will James be clutch in the 4th quarters unlike last year’s finals? How healthy are Wade and Bosh? Will Westbrook play under control?
Oklahoma City is the NBA’s 28th biggest market and Miami is the 14th. This just show that market size doesn’t matter it’s all about the players. Stars draw the league
In Oklahoma City the game drew a 44.3 rating. That is the highest for an NBA ever in the market. In Miami the game drew a 30.5 rating.
Probably after each game in this series there will be new TV records set.
