Kyrie Irving was the number one pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA draft. Now, the former Duke star might play for Australia is this year’s upcoming Olympics in London.
You see Irving is a dual citizen; he was born in Australia while his father was playing professional basketball there. Irving has no chance to make the USA squad this Olympic, so why not try to play for another country. It will only make Irving better as he will get to play against the best players in the world.
Well if he plays for Australia this summer it would create a problem for Irving. You see once you play for a country in an international competition you are committed to play for the country forever. So if Irving played for Australia he could never play for USA. I am sure this will be the deciding factor whether or not to play for Australia this summer.
Right now USA basketball is headed by Irving’s former college coach Mike Krzyzewski. I can almost bet Irving wants the chance to play for Coach K in the Olympics.
Irving is having a great rookie season so far this season and it four years I am sure he will be ready to battle Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook,John Wall and Eric Gordon for those Olympic roster spots in the future.
Irving told the Akron Beacon Journal the following.
“Still haven’t decided,” Irving said. “Really it will come down to whether or not I want to give up my whole summer.”
Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott on Irving maybe playing for Australia: “For a 19-year-old, that’s a big decision. He obviously needs to get as much advice as he can from a lot of people that he trusts and believes in. I know he talks to Chris Paul and Grant Hill and [former Olympians] like that. I would seek their advice. Talk to his dad. I don’t think it’s something he’s going to take lightly and it’s something he should make sure he takes his sweet time on.”
It will be interesting to see what Irving decides to do. I think he won’t play for Australia this summer because he will want to play for the USA in the future.
