NBA Eastern Conference Power Rankings

Published on January 16, 2012 by Scott Shirley   ·   2 Comments

Every Monday here at Roundballchat I will release either my Eastern or Western Conference power rankings.  I will update each conference every two weeks.  Today it’s the Eastern Conference.

1. Chicago Bulls – The Bulls are by far the best team in the East and that is with Richard Hamilton currently hurt. The Bulls are the best defensive team in the league only giving up 83.8 ppg. Chicago is clearly the best rebounding team also having a +8.21 on the glass. Derrick Rose and Luol Deng are carrying the Bulls on offense.

2. Philadelphia 76ers- The 76ers haven’t really played a tough schedule yet. But they are still winning easily. They have the best point differential in the NBA with a +15.2. They are the second best scoring team in the East as well as second best defensive team. Seven players are averaging in double figures. Lou Williams is leading the way.

3. Indiana Pacers – Before the season I predicted the Pacers would finish in the top 4 in the East and so far they are proving me right. Danny Granger leads the way then the Pacers have 6 other players averaging in double figures. The Pacers are the best free throw shooting team in the East, this helps them win close games.

4. Orlando Magic – Despite all the Dwight Howard trade rumors it has not hurt the Magic’s play this season. Howard is playing like his normal self and Ryan Anderson is having a breakout season. The Magic are making 10 threes while shooting over 40 % from three.

5. Miami Heat – The Heat have lost three in a row, but I still think by the end of the season they will be on top of this list. Right now they need to get Dwyane Wade healthy. LeBron James is having a great season so far but he still needs to get better in the 4th quarter.

6. Atlanta Hawks – Poor Atlanta, they were off to a great start then all star center Al Horford got hurt. Horford is likely out for the season. Joe Johnson and Josh Smith will need to pick up the scoring touch even more now.

7. New York Knicks – The Knicks have two of the best scorers in the league with Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire but after these two they lack scoring depth. Rookie Iman Shumpert has been a surprise. The Knicks really lack point guard play. This is shown by the Knicks averaging 18 assists per game and 16 turnovers per game.

8. Boston Celtics- The Celtics age is finally starting to catch up with them. Kevin Garnett is having his worst season so far in a while. Guards Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo have both been playing well but the Celtics are not playing well inside. The Celtics have the best three -point percentage in the East.

9. Cleveland Cavaliers- Rookie Kyrie Irving is living up to the hype so far leading the Cavs in scoring. Antawn Jamison still is putting up great numbers despite his age. The Cavs really lack scoring depth as only 3 players are averaging in double figures.

10. Milwaukee Bucks- The Bucks have three elite scorers in Brandon Jennings, Steven Jackson, and Andrew Bogut, but after these three they lack talent. Milwaukee is coming off a 25 point loss to Dallas. I think this team could be better.

11. Toronto Raptors- The Raptors have lost 4 in a row including a loss to Washington there only win. Andrea Bargnani is having a great season averaging over 20 points on the young season. The Raptors really lack a physical presence in the paint.

12. Detroit Pistons – The Pistons have fallen quickly. This team really struggles to score the ball. The Pistons are 29th in the NBA in scoring. Greg Monroe is having a great sophomore season and Brandon Knight is having a great rookie year.

13. New Jersey Nets – The loss of Brook Lopez really hurt this team especially defensively. The Nets give up over 100 points per game that’s 28 in the NBA. Deron Williams continues to be one of the best point guards in the league. Rookie MarShon Brooks has proven he can score in this league.

14. Charlotte Bobcats – The Bobcats give up more points than any team in the NBA. The Bobcats really lack an elite scorer. D.J. Augustin is the leading  scorer for the Bobcats.

15. Washington Wizards – Just give the Wizards the number one pick in the 2012 NBA draft. This team is just awful plus you have the head coach calling out players because they have played in too many summer leagues.
