Did the Referees help the Duke comeback? (Videos)

Published on February 9, 2012 by Scott Shirley   ·   1 Comment

The Duke Blue Devils were down by 10 82-72 to the North Carolina Tar Heels with 2:35 left in the game. Then the Blue Devils finished the game on a 13 to 2 run and beat the Tar Heels on a last second three pointer by Austin Rivers and won the game 85-84. The Key to this comeback was North Carolina missed free throws and turnovers but three missed calls by the officials also helped. Below I will explain the missed calls by the zebras and show the video proof.

1. First is maybe the craziest play of the game when North Carolina’s Tyler Zeller tipped in a miss three pointer from Duke’s Ryan Kelly. However as replays show Zeller got shoved in the back by Duke’s Mason Plumlee. There is no question that the shove in the back most likely caused Zeller to tip the ball in the basket . This should have been a foul on Duke and North Carolina’s ball. This cut the North Carolina lead to 1 with 18 seconds left.

2. Next when Duke was still down 10 with 2 :20 Ryan Kelly airballed a three pointer but the officials said it was tipped by North Carolina’s John Henson, however replays show the ball was not tipped. Then Duke’s Tyler Thornton hit a three pointer seconds later since Duke got the ball when he should have been North Carolina ball.

Check out video of blown calls 1 and 2 below.

3. Off a North Carolina turnover Duke’s Seth Curry hit a three in transition cutting the North Carolina lead to 4 with about a 1: 30 left. However Curry walked real bad he took about 4 steps before shooting the three. This error by the officials was pointed out by the TV announcers on ESPN. So this basket should not have counted as it would have been North Carolina ball.

I hate when officials have an impact on the game but there missed calls likely gave Duke the win but that is just part of the game.

However despite the officials missed calls the blame for this loss in on the North Carolina players. You can’t explain blowing a 10 point lead with 2 minutes left in the game. If the Tar Heels make free throws and don’t turn the ball over they win the game. They also win if they learn how to guard the three point line.
