You can debate the strength of the 2011 free agent class, but there is no doubt that Nene and Marc Gasol were the top 2 free agent. Nene has resigned with the Denver Nuggets while Gasol resigned with the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Nuggets re-signed Nene to a five-year deal, that might be up to $67 million. Lots of teams pursed Nene like the Nets, Rockets, and Pacers but in the end he decided to stay with the Nuggets. Nene has been a Nugget his whole career. Last season he averaged 14.5 points per game and 7.6 rebounds. He also led the NBA in field goal percentage.
The Nuggets also traded for Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer on Tuesday to add depth because Wilson Chandler, J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin will be in China for a while.
The Memphis Grizzlies had an exciting playoff run last season and now their best player Marc Gasol is staying with the team. Gasol has signed a four-year deal that could be up to $58 Million. Last season Gasol averaged 11.7 points per game and 7 rebounds, but he elevated his play during playoff time. The Houston Rockets put a claim in Gasol but the Grizzles matched the offer.
Marc has been a Memphis basketball player ever since his high school days at Lausanne, and we’re excited for him to continue his blossoming career with the Grizzlies,” Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said in a statement.
I like that the top 2 free agents in this year’s class decided to stay with their current teams. This is what the NBA needs. These player didn’t go the big to the big markets they stayed home. These players stayed with there so-called small markets teams. The NBA needs star players to be playing in small markets, all the star power can’t be in all the big cities. Good for Nene and Gasol.
