Kansas vs. Kentucky: Breakdown Position by Position

Published on April 2, 2012 by Scott Shirley   ·   1 Comment

Point Guard

Tyshawn Taylor (Kansas)/ Marquis Teague (Kentucky) -Taylor is one of the best points guards in the nation though he struggled in 4 of the tournament games. He is averaging 8.9 points per game in the big dance. In 5 tournament games he is averaging 5 assists and 5 rebounds per game not bad for a guard. Teague struggled early in the season but now he has grown up and he isn’t playing like a freshman anymore. In the tournament he is averaging 13.2 points, 5.2 assists and 2.8 rebounds. If Teague is playing his best the Wildcats might be unbeatable. The edge goes to the senior Taylor. The first time these two teams played Taylor had 22 points. EDGE- Kansas

Shooting Guard

Doron Lamb (Kentucky)/Elijah Johnson (Kansas)- Lamb is the best shooter left in the tournament. Lamb has turned his game up another notch in the NCAA tournament. He is averaging 15.4 points per game compared to 13.2 points in the regular season. He is shooting 50 % from three in 5 tournament games. Johnson has stepped us game big time for the Jayhawks. In the tournament he is averaging 13.4 points per game compared to only 9.6 in the regular season. He is making about 2 threes per game in the tourney. Lamb has the edge here because of his ability to shoot the ball. EDGE Kentucky

Small Forward

Michael Kidd Gilchrist (Kentucky)/ Travis Releford (Kansas)- Gilchrist is still the best freshman in the country behind Davis. No one can stop him from driving to the basket he just has too much strength. For the tournament he is averaging 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds. In his last three games he is averaging 17.3 points. Releford is best known for being a great defender. He gets most of his points by driving to the rim. In the NCAA tournament he is averaging 9.7 points and 4.4 rebounds. Last time these teams played MKG was 1 rebound away from a double double. EDGE- Kentucky

Power Forward

Thomas Robinson (Kansas)/ Terrence Jones (Kentucky) – Robinson is the most dominant low post scorer in the country. He is also probably the strongest too. In the NCAA tournament he is averaging 16.3 points and 11.6 rebounds. Over his last three games he is averaging about 19 points per game. Jones is playing the best basketball of his Kentucky career right now. In the past he had problems with consistency but not right now. So far in 5 tournament games Jones is averaging 12 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. In the first matchup Jones got the best of Robinson but I don’t see this happening twice. EDGE- Kansas

Center

Anthony Davis (Kentucky)/ Jeff Withey (Kansas) – Davis is not only the best freshman in the country he is also the best overall player and defensive player as well. Just look what he is doing in the NCAA tournament. Davis is averaging 15.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.6 blocks, and 2.6 assists. His skill for his size separates him from other players. Withey was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and so far he has lived up to the hype in the NCAA tournament. He is averaging 5.4 blocks and 6.4 rebounds. Withey is also averaging 7.5 points per game. In the head-to-head matchup in November Withey finished with 4 blocks and Davis had 7. Davis however had more rebounds and points. EDGE- Kentucky

Bench

Darius Miller of Kentucky played anywhere else in the country he would be starting. The senior Miller, doesn’t complain and brings it every game. So far in the tournament Miller is averaging 13 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He is also shooting 17 out of 18 from the free throw line. Not bad for a bench player. EDGE- Kentucky
