The Lakers want Raymond Felton

Published on March 11, 2012 by Scott Shirley   ·   No Comments

There is no question the weakness of the Los Angeles Lakers is point guard play, that is the main reason they are 24-16 on the season. That’s why the Lakers tried so hard to get Chris Paul. Now the Lakers are going after Portland Trailblazer point guard Raymond Felton before the trade deadline. This according to CSNNW.

A league source has informed CSNNW.com that the Los Angeles Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers have had “exploratory talks” regarding Trail Blazers’ guard Raymond Felton.

According to the source, talks have been ongoing for weeks and it is likely to involve Lakers’ guard Steve Blake in the deal.

Derek Fisher was a good fit for the Lakers at the point but now he is just too old. For the season Fisher is averaging 5.6 points and 3.4 assists. Steve Blake is a decent backup point guard but that is it plus he is injury prone. For the season Blake is averaging 5.8 points and 3.4 assists.

Star Kobe Bryant leads the Lakers in assists with 4.8 a game. That’s not a good think when your shooting guard leads your team in assists.

Felton had made it clear he is not happy in Portland. He doesn’t see eye to eye with the head coach. I think Felton would be a perfect fit for the Lakers. He can score when needed and he is not going to take shots away from Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.

I could see where Felton is coming from last season with the Knicks in 54 games Felton averaged a career high 17.1 points per game. Compared to this season where he is averaging a career low 10 points with Portland.

With the Knicks Felton also averaged 9.1 assists per game compared to this season where he is only averaging 6.2 assists. Felton is also averaging about 6 minutes less per game with Portland.

Felton is shooting a career low 38 % from the field this season. He is also shooting a career low from three 25 %.

Felton played his best basketball with the Knicks no question. He is best fitted for that style the Knicks play run and gun. He is not fitted for a slower style offense like Portland plays.

Even though Felton is having a down season I still believe he has a lot left in the tank. I just think he is in the wrong situation right now. I can see him excelling with the Lakers. I am sure Bryant wants to play with a point guard like Felton.
