Lakers had interest in Allen Iverson

There is no question the weakness of the Los Angeles Lakers is point guard play, that is the main reason they are 16-12 on the season. That’s why the Lakers tried so hard to get Chris Paul.

Derek Fisher was a good fit for the Lakers at the point but now he is just too old. For the season Fisher is averaging 5 points and 3.7 assists. Steve Blake is a decent backup point guard but that is it plus he is injury prone. For the season Blake is averaging 7 points and 2.7 assists.

Star Kobe Bryant leads the Lakers in assists with 5 a game. That’s not a good think when your shooting guard leads your team in assists.

Now the Lakers must be so desperate that they were looking at Allen Iverson.

This comes from ESPN Los Angeles.com

Allen Iverson, who sources indicated the Lakers had some interest in as long as he was willing to go to the NBA Developmental League for a few weeks first, is not the answer. He’s simply not a point guard. The Lakers are also said to be interested in former Toronto Raptors point guard Rafer Alston, who helped the Orlando Magic reach the NBA Finals in 2009. But who knows if that will materialize into anything?

The Lakers have point guard problems but Iverson would not be the answer he would make things worse. To be at his best Iverson needs the ball in his hands and that is not going to work with Kobe on the team. Plus the Lakers need a pass first point guard not a shot first point guard. At this point it is almost too late in the season for Iverson to join the team. It would take him forever to get in shape especially this NBA season because teams have so many games in a short amount of time. Another factor is how would Iverson react to being in Los Angeles?

If the Lakers want to go far into the playoffs this season they will need better point guard play. I think the Lakers will try to do this through the trade deadline.
