Top 5 Freshman in college basketball

Published on January 20, 2012 by Scott Shirley   ·   1 Comment

Freshman have a huge impact on the game of college basketball.  Who have been the best 5 freshman  so far this college basketball season find out below.

1. Anthony Davis (Kentucky) - A couple years ago in high school Davis was a guard, now he has grown into a 6’11” power forward with guard skills. Davis was the rated the best freshman coming into this season and his play this season has backed that up. So far this season Davis is averaging 13.8 points pg, 10.4 rebounds pg, and 4.7 blocks per game. Davis has more blocks this season than most college teams have total. Davis is also shooting 66 % from the field.

2. Cody Zeller (Indiana) - Zeller has been the difference for the Hoosiers this season averaging 14.9 points pg. He gives the Hoosiers a true post player something that has lacked in recent years. He is the reason why the Hoosiers are having a bounce back season. Zeller is also averaging 6.5 rebounds pg and 1.6 steals pg. He is shooting 65 % from the field. Right now I think Cody is clearly better than his older brothers.

3. Michael Kidd Gilchrist (Kentucky) – Gilchrist is the most versatile freshman in the country; he can do it all. For the season Gilchrist is averaging 13.2 points pg, 7.5 rebounds pg, 2.1 assists pg, 1.2 steals pg , and 1.2 blocks pg. Gilchrist can also shot the three. He is also one of the strongest freshman in the country.

4. Trey Burke (Michigan) - The question coming into the season for Michigan was point guard play, but Burke has answered that. For the season Burke is averaging 14.6 points pg, 4.8 assists pg, and 3.6 rebounds pg. He has also made 30 threes on the season. Without Burke Michigan wouldn’t be a top 25 team this season.

5. Tony Wroten (Washington ) – Wroten is the leading scorer in this year’s freshman class with 16.8 points pg. He is not getting the hype of the four players above because Washington is having a down season so far. Wroten is also averaging 4.5 rebounds pg, 3.3 assists pg and 2 steals pg.

Other Noteworthy Freshman

Bradley Beal (Florida)

Eli Carter (Rutgers)

Moe Harkless (St. Johns)
