Many of the NBA players were just tired of the NBA lockout so they went overseas to play basketball. Now their contracts they signed overseas could come back to haunt them.
Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler, all of the Denver Nuggets along with the Phoenix Suns’ Aaron Brooks signed contracts to play in China. The China leagues will not let the NBA players out of their contracts until their season is over. The season is not over until March.
A Chinese Basketball official issued the following statement to CBS Sports:
“They can play, get paid (in China) and return to the NBA in March, or they can not get paid, and return to the NBA in March.”
This will get interesting in the next couple of days, there has to be a way these players can get out of their contract right? In the end I see these players getting out of their contract with a certain amount of money being involved. Will the China league really want to fight the NBA?
If this is not the case however this will really hurt the Denver Nuggets that is like half of their team.
Utah Jazz star Mehmet Okur is playing over in Turkey right now. The Twitter account of the Utah Jazz released the following statement. That’s right the NBA lockout is not over yet contract wise.
@tribjazz: #UtahJazz’s Mehmet Okur cannot return to U.S. until #NBA lockout officially ends. Contract in Turkey has an opt-clause, but it hinges on work stoppage being lifted.
I am sure there are a lot more players in similar situations that has no be brought to light yet.
