#80 St. Johns : College Basketball Countdown

Published on October 14, 2011 by Scott Shirley   ·   No Comments

College basketball is right around the corner. Games will be starting in a month or so, and practices are starting soon. College basketball might be the only game in town, which will give even more attention to the college game. I can’t wait for this upcoming season.

Here at Roundballchat I will release my top 100 teams for the 2011-12 college basketball season. I will start at 100 and count my way down. I will rank all the 74 programs in the six major conferences, as well as 26 mid majors in my top 100 countdown. This month I will continue my college basketball previews with top players and match ups and much more; I am just finishing my conference power rankings.

Who will put at number 1? North Carolina or Kentucky or maybe a surprise stay tuned to Roundballchat for the next month to find out.

# 80. St Johns

Coach: Steve Lavin (First season at St. Johns 21-12), overall 166-89, 8 years

2010-11 Record: 21-12 overall, 12-6 in Big East (Tie 3rd)

Starters Returning (0)

Wow, no team in America lost what St. John lost. The Red Storm loses their top 8 scorers. Head coach Steve Lavin was a great hire; he got St. Johns to the NCAA tourney when not many people thought he could. Since they lost so many players Lavin brought in a top 5 recruiting class. The only returning scholarship player is Malik Stith (3.3 ppg ); he should be the starting point guard. Freshman D’Angelo Harrison will likely be the other starter in the backcourt; he is a pure scorer. Other players that will all be in the mix in the backcourt are Phillip Greene, JUCO transfer Nurideen Lindsey, and freshman Amir Garrett, who is also a standout baseball player. Sir’Dominic Pointer is the Red Storm’s highest recruit he will likely play at the small forward position. He is a very tough player and defender, but needs to work on defense. The Red Storm will lack muscle in the frontcourt. JUCO transfer God’s Gift Achiuwa is the only player over 205 pounds. Also playing up front will be freshman Norvel Pelle and Maurice Harkless .  The bad news for the St. Johns is Garrett and Pelle will be ineligible for the fall semester.
