Arizona gets top recruit and other recruiting news

Published on September 5, 2011 by Scott Shirley   ·   No Comments

Time again for another recruiting report. I will keep this a weekly thing. There were three big commits this week. All these players I am updating on are the class of 2012 meaning they will be playing in college during the 2012-13 season. The AAU tournaments have ended so prospects have time to make their college choices now.

Brandon Ashley (Arizona)– Another huge get for head coach Sean Miller. Ashley is rated the #1 power forward in the country and the 3rd best player overall by Scout.com. Ashley plays at Findlay Prep in Nevada, one of the top schools in the country. Ashley has great length and is very gifted athlete; he has ton of upside and potential. He runs the floor well, and he also has great hands that allows him to have pretty good post moves. Ashley needs to work on his shooting and getting stronger. Wow, Sean Miller has Arizona back where they belong competing for titles every year. This was a great hire for the Wildcats. Ashley is the third recruit for the class of 2012 for Arizona, he joins fellow five star prospect Grant Jerrett, and solid four star shooting guard Gabe York.

Montay Brandon (Florida State) – Brandon is rated the 17th best small forward in the country by Scout.com. He plays his high school basketball at Wesleyan Christian Academy, in High Point North Carolina. He is a very solid athlete, who has a very good handle on the perimeter. He is a solid defender with his length. Brandon needs to work on his shooting and getting stronger. Head coach at Florida State Leonard Hamilton continues to bring  talent in to Tallahassee. Florida State had been the third best program in the ACC behind NorthCarolina and Duke the last couple years. With Hamilton bringing in players like Brandon they will stay a top the ACC.

L. J. Rose (Baylor) – Rose was ranked the #1 point guard coming into the summer, but spotty play and a foot injury caused his stock to drop; he is ranked the 11th best point guard by Scout.com. Rose is from Houston, Texas. For being a point guard Rose is a great three-point shooter. He also has excellent passing ability and court vision. He needs to work on getting quicker, and his commitment to the defensive end. Scott Drew continues to bring in talent to Waco. Now he has to put all the talent together as a team. Rose is the second big commit for Baylor; Isaiah Austin a five star prospect has already committed to the Bears.

Other Commits this week

PF Demetris Morant (UNLV)

SG Dillon Graham (Florida)

C Obij Aget (New Mexico)

SG Shawn Lester (Charlotte)

SF DeJuan Marrero (DePaul)

PF Devin Thomas (Wake Forest)
