Minnesota Timberwolves fans were happy at the beginning of the month when Ricky Rubio announced that he was coming to the NBA and would play for the Timberwolves. After Rubio’s team Barcelona won the Spanish ACB title last night he told the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo that he may stay in Europe after all.
“We are talking with Barcelona and we will soon see,” Rubio said.
Though it was reported that Rubio was coming over to the states the Timberwolves never confirmed it as a team. A NBA lockout will not help Rubio’s decision to go to the NBA. We will just have to wait and see as I am sure this will be a major story in the months to come.
The Timberwolves really need Rubio for this upcoming season. Rubio was drafted 5th overall by the Timberwolves two years ago. In the same draft that Minnesota took Rubio, they took point guard Johnny Flynn with the sixth overall pick. Flynn has really struggled and has been a huge disappointment. The Timberwolves need a true point guard in the worst way. Rubio, who is only 20 years old, can come in from day one and start.
The Timberwolves have talent in the frontcourt, they just need a true point guard to give them the ball. Forward Kevin Love was a NBA all star, and averaged 20 points per game, just think what he can do with a point guard. Small Forward Michael Beasley loves the mid range jumper, he averaged 19 points per game this season, Rubio will give him more room.
Don’t be fooled by Rubio’s baby face, he is a flashy true point guard. Rubio has great basketball IQ, outstanding ball handling skills, rare court vision, good percentage three point shooter, and he plays with great confidence. He excels at the pick and roll. Rubio needs to get better at finishing at the rim, turning the ball over too much, and shooting off the dribble. That’s what I think of his game; this is what fellow Spanish star Pau Gasol thinks of Rubio.
“He’s a special player and a very good point guard, very unselfish. He’s got great size, great length. He knows how to play the game very well. He’s got a great feel for the game. He’s just a guy that will get the team going and do what he needs to do.”
The Timberwolves had the worst record in the NBA last season, will they get any better with a true point guard?
