According to Ric Bucher of ESPN the Magazine, the Golden State Warriors are in trade talks with thePhiladelphia 76ers. The trade would send Monta Ellis to the 76ers and Andre Iguodala to the Warriors. To me this trade makes sense for both teams.
The Warriors gave up 105.7 points per game last season, which ranked tied for 27th in the league. They were also last in the NBA in rebound differential at minus 4.3 rebounds per game. There is no question the Warriors have to get better in these areas if they want to get back to the playoffs. They need to get better defensively and Iguodala does that for them.
Iguodala is a lock down defender; he will bring toughness to the Warriors. Iguodala is only 6’6”, but he averaged 7 rebounds per game last season. He is an elite athlete with great jumping ability. He can also score, averaging 11 points per game last season.
For the 76ers they would get Ellis who averaged 24.1 points per game last season. I consider Ellis to be one of the best scorers in the league, but he really doesn’t do much defensively. Ellis is a great shooter something the 76ers need. Ellis would play shooting guard, which would allow Evan Turner to play the small forward. The 76ers need more help scoring since they only averaged 99 points per game last season, 19th in the league.
Another reason why this deal makes sense for the 76ers is the cap space they will be gaining. Ellis is owed $11 million for the next three seasons, and Iguodala makes $13.5 million next season, and his contract increases by $1.2 million the next two seasons.
I really think this would be a great trade for both teams. The Warriors new advisor Jerry West has made it no secret that he wants to get better on the defensive side of the ball, and he is willing to give up a player who scores a lot of points.
