Cleveland Cavaliers take PG Kyrie Irving 1st overall: Grade A

The question for months was Kyrie Irving or Derrick Williams? The Cleveland Cavaliers decided to take Duke Kyrie Irving with the 1st overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. Despite only playing 11 games at Duke because of injuries, Irving is still the best player in this draft regardless of position. Irving can do it all from being a passer to a scorer. He is most compared to Chris Paul. The Cavs need a new face of the franchise replacing LeBron James.
Despite their bad record the Cavs still got pretty good production out of their point guards Baron Davis, Daniel Gibson, and Ramon Sessions, but still none of these guys are elite, and none of them are potential long time starters.
Strengths- very high basketball IQ, shoots high percentage, excellent ball handling and always under control. Weaknesses- injury prone, a little undersized, lacks explosive athleticism.

Kyrie and Derrick are good players, but I don’t think they would be drafted in the top 5 of most drafts. Maybe the foreign players will surprise us 5 years from now. There will be a lot of hole-filling in this draft, no franchise-changing players.
