2011 NBA Draft:My top 10 Point Guards

Published on June 16, 2011 by Scott Shirley   ·   1 Comment

With the 2011 NBA draft coming up in a week here are my top 10-point guards in the draft. There aren’t many true point guards in this year’s draft class; Kyrie Irving is probably the only one who is an elite prospect. Brandon Knight, Kemba Walker, and Jimmer Fredette can play both the point guard and shooting guard.

1.Kyrie Irving (Freshman Duke)

Despite only playing 11 games at Duke because of injuries, Irving is still the best player in this draft regardless of position. Irving can do it all from being a passer to a scorer. He is most compared to Chris Paul.

Strengths- very high basketball IQ, shoots high percentage, excellent ball handling and always under control. Weaknesses- injury prone, a little undersized, lacks explosive athleticism.

2.Brandon Knight (Freshman Kentucky)

Knight is coming off a great freshman year at Kentucky were he led the Wildcats to the final four, he hit a couple of game winner shots to get them there. He is an excellent scorer but can he develop into a point guard? Think Tyreke Evans.

Strengths- good three point shooter, clutch player, great size for point guard, very fast and athletic. Weaknesses- needs to be a true point guard, needs to cut down on turnovers, has gunner mentality.

3. Kemba Walker (Junior Connecticut)

All Walker did this year is lead his team to the national championship. Walker is your typical New York City guard, who can also lead his team. I am not saying he will be as good as Allen Iverson, but he plays like him.

Strengths- He is a explosive scorer, has excellent quickness and first step, strong mid range game. Weaknesses- not a great shooter especially from three, undersized, needs better decision making.

4.Jimmer Fredette (Senior BYU)

Fredette can score and score some more. Fredette led the country in scoring this year; he can score in multiple ways. Will he be a point guard or shooting guard? Think Ben Gordon.

Strengths- deep shooting range, quick release on shot, explosive scorer. Weaknesses- really struggles on the defense end, sometimes has bad shot selection.

5.Darius Morris (Sophomore Michigan)

Not a lot of people heard of Morris coming into this season, but after his play this season he is a top prospect. He is a true point guard but needs to work on his shooting. Think Andre Miller.

Strengths- great size, court vision and passing ability, drive to the rim. Weaknesses- needs to get stronger, has to work on being a lot better shooter, add more muscle.

6-10

6. Reggie Jackson (Junior Boston College)

7. Nolan Smith (Senior Duke)

8. Shelvin Mack (Junior Butler)

9. Charles Jenkins (Senior Hofstra)

10. Norris Cole (Senior Cleveland State)
