With the 2011 NBA draft coming up in a week here are my top 10-shooting guards in the draft. The shooting guard position is really really weak. There is a huge drop off after the top 2, and the rest of the shooting guards are just okay. There isn’t a shooting guard in this year’s draft that has all the tools on offense and plays well on the defensive end.
When you think of Colorado you don’t certainly think about good basketball players, but Burks is a top guard in this year’s draft and was one of the best players in the Big 12. As for current NBA players that compare to Burks think last year’s second round pick Evan Turner.
Strengths- He is a pure scorer who is really aggressive, excels at mid range game, good size. Weaknesses- needs to shoot the three better, needs to add muscle, work on ball handling
Thompson did it all for Washington State last year from scoring to rebounding to passing, and he even can block the ball. He was a one man show for his team. He may have some character concerns as he was suspended some last year. Think Kevin Martin.
Strengths- He is a pure shooter with range, has basketball IQ, quick and can create his own shoot. Weaknesses- lacks elite athleticism, needs to add muscle, character concerns.
Before last year not a lot of people heard of Brooks, but after last year he averaged 24 points and 8 rebounds in the tough Big East Conference; he put his name on the map, without getting much help from his teammates. Brooks most compares to Jordan Crawford in the NBA.
Strengths- great rebounder for guard, versatile scorer driving and jump shooting, can create own shot. Weaknesses- sometimes turns into a ball hog, not a great athlete, slow release on shot.
No player probably more than Leslie was on SportsCenter’s top 10 this year, because he often came up with monster dunks. He is a very high motor player who led his team to the NCAA tournament this year. Think Shannon Brown.
Strengths–Very explosive athlete, excels on defense, strong rebounder. Weaknesses- lacks range on his shot, poor dribbling skills, struggles one on one.
Hopson’s haircut looks like he is playing in the 80s, but besides that he was a top player this year for the Tennessee Vols. He is said to have had questionable interviews with NBA teams. As for a current NBA player think Matt Barnes.
Strengths- Great size for shooting guard, explosive athlete, shoots well from three. Weaknesses- is very inconsistent, turns the ball over to much, poor shot selection.
