#54 Old Dominion : College Basketball Countdown

Published on October 21, 2011 by Scott Shirley   ·   No Comments

College basketball is right around the corner. Games will be starting in a month or so, and practices are starting soon. College basketball might be the only game in town, which will give even more attention to the college game. I can’t wait for this upcoming season.

Here at Roundballchat I will release my top 100 teams for the 2011-12 college basketball season. I will start at 100 and count my way down. I will rank all the 74 programs in the six major conferences, as well as 26 mid majors in my top 100 countdown. This month I will continue my college basketball previews with top players and match ups and much more; I am just finishing my conference power rankings.

Who will put at number 1? North Carolina or Kentucky or maybe a surprise stay tuned to Roundballchat for the next month to find out.

# 54 Old Dominion

Coach: Blaine Taylor (Ten seasons at ODU215-110), overall 357-175, 17 years

2010-11 Record: 27-7 overall, 14-4 in CAA (Tie/2nd)

Starters Returning (2) Kent Bazemore, Chris Cooper

What does it say about Blaine Taylor and the Old Dominion program that they can lose their 4 of top5 scores and be ranked this high? Swingman small forward Kent Bazemore (12.3 ppg) does a little bit of everything for the Monarchs. He is the team’s best three-point shooter and was the conference’s best defender last year. Chris Cooper (5 ppg) is a very physical player at center. Nick Wright (1.5 ppg) will likely start at power forward. The depth in the frontcourt lacks playing experience. The depth will be provided by Anton Larsen (1.3 ppg), redshirt freshman Richard Ross, freshman Jason Pimentel, and JUCO transfer Nayquan Mitchell. Shooting guard Trian Iliadis (6 ppg) played well last year off the bench. Taking over the point guard duties is Marquel De Lancey (1.9 ppg); he will need to step in up. Just like the frontcourt the depth in the backcourt lacks experience. Freshman Breon Key and Dimitri Batten are the backups here. Clemson transfer Donte Hill will provide a lot when he comes eligible.
