What to do during a NBA lockout, well Nolan Smith was coaching his former AAU team. Smith just finished his superb 4-year career at Duke and was picked in the first round by the Portland Trailblazers. Smith was coaching the D.C. Assault in an AAU tournament in Phoenix tonight and he managed to get ejected from the game. Smith has never been ejected from any basketball game while he was playing.
Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com talked to Smith about the ejection.
“Coaching and playing is totally different. I was frustrated with the team not playing hard and not playing with energy. I knew my team would respond in the right way.Refs were missing some obvious calls. And my kids needed some fire in them.”
“We were down 19 when I did it, and we came back and lost by 2.”
Smith speaking like a true coach he played for one of the best all time in Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. I am sure he has learned something from him. Krzyzewski sometimes gets technicals to fire up his team. Smith was really a coach out on the court for Duke; he led his team to the NCAA championship in 2010.
This was somewhat surprising because Smith is really not a talker out on the court; he doesn’t trash talk at all. He just goes out and gets the job done. He does all his talking by his play on the court. If you listen to him speak he is very soft spoken.
Smith is a true leader and a future head coach after his playing days are over with.
